— NorthShore University HealthSystem has named Theodore Mazzone chairman of the department of medicine, the second major hire in a week.
An internist, Dr. Mazzone is the founding director of the University of Illinois at Chicago Center for Clinical and Translational Science, which supports clinical research, and he has extensive ties to the Chicago area, according to a NorthShore news release.
NorthShore is affiliated with the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Dr. Mazzone has held faculty or staff positions at Michael Reese Hospital and the University of Chicago, and has served in clinical leadership positions at Rush University Medical Center.
“I believe NorthShore provides exciting opportunities to continue developing innovative approaches to advance patient care,” Dr. Mazzone said in the news release.
Dr. Mazzone, 59, received his medical degree from Northwestern University, according to NorthShore. He’s been dubbed one of “America’s Top Doctors” by New York research firm Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. and one of “Chicago’s Top Doctors” by Chicago Magazine, and serves on the American Board of Internal Medicine for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.
Last week, the Evanston-based hospital group announced the hiring of Paul Pearson, a Wheaton native, to lead cardiac surgery.
NorthShore has four hospitals, in Evanston, Glenview, Highland Park and Skokie, as well as 2,400 affiliated physicians and a research institute.
