Liverpool John Lennon airport owner Peel Airports urges Business Secretary to oppose APD rise

LIVERPOOL John Lennon airport owner Peel Airports has written to Business Secretary Vince Cable urging him to back calls to hold Air Passenger Duty levels.

Next week, Chancellor George Osborne is expected to announce a double-inflation rise in APD in his Autumn Statement.

Peel is part of the Airport Operators’ Association which is lobbying against a rise.

Craig Richmond, Peel Airports chief executive, writes: “Here in Liverpool, aviation is responsible for sustaining thousands of jobs and Liverpool John Lennon airport makes a crucial contribution to the regional economy.

“The Government’s proposals to further increase APD next year on people departing UK airports could have devastating consequences on jobs and businesses.”

He adds: “There is a strong likelihood that further rises in aviation tax will depress the number of business travellers and tourists coming to Liverpool at the very time when we need more inward investment.”
