(Crain’s) — Longtime Chicago Alderman Bernard Stone was denied his re-election bid in the Far North Side’s 50th Ward, which he’s represented on the City Council for 38 years.
With 100% of the vote counted, Mr. Stone captured 38% of the vote to challenger Debra Silverstein’s 62%.
Mr. Stone reached out to his opponent to concede the race, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “At this point it would appear I cannot pick up enough votes to win,” he said shortly before 8 p.m., the paper reported. “That would indicate that would be my last term.”
Chicago Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel campaigned with Ms. Silverstein in recent days.
Turnout in Tuesday’s election — featuring 14 runoff contests for 50 council spots — was about 28%, according to the Chicago Board of Elections.
Results suggest Mr. Emanuel won’t get all nine aldermanic candidates he supported.
He’s spent nearly $250,000 on the races, giving to seven candidates he endorsed.
Those include incumbent South Side Alderman Freddrenna Lyle over challenger Roderick Sawyer, former Chicago Mayor Eugene Sawyer’s son. With 100% of precincts reporting, Mr. Sawyer had 51% of the vote.
Mr. Emanuel endorsed incumbent John Rice over Nicholas Sposato on the Northwest Side. With all the precincts reporting, Mr. Sposato had 56% compared with 44% for Mr. Rice.
The mayor-elect also endorsed Alderman Willie Cochran, a former cop who faces Grammy-winning rap artist Che “Rhymefest” Smith. With 96% reporting, Mr. Cochran led with 54% over Mr. Smith’s 46%.
In other races:
In the North Side’s 43rd Ward, which includes part of Lincoln Park, Michele Smith led Tim Egan 51% to 49%, with just over 98% of the ballots counted.
Also on the North Side, in the 46th Ward, home of retiring Alderman Helen Shiller, James Cappleman defeated Molly Phelan, 55% to 45%.
Alderman Danny Solis held onto his council seat, defeating Cuahutemoc Morfin 54% to 46%, to continue representing the near west side 25th Ward.
17th Ward Alderman Latasha Thomas appeared to have won re-election in her South Side district, beating David Moore 53% to 47%.
