A symbol of hope, liberty and freedom that represents the American dream celebrates a milestone birthday
Today marks the anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty – who has been a beacon of hope, and a symbol of freedom and liberty for the past 125 years. Lady Liberty, who was dedicated to the people of the United States on October 28, 1886 to mark the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the friendship between the French and Americans, has been an iconic figure that is very near-and-dear to the hearts’ of Americans everywhere. So obviously she’s celebrating her birthday in style.
Her birthday celebration, which has been raging on for a week, includes the activation of webcams on her torch that will let viewers gaze out over New York Harbor, read the tablet in her hands or peer over visitors on the grounds below. The ceremony tops off a week of events centered around this monumental date, including the debut of a major museum exhibition about poet Emma Lazarus, who helped bring the statue renown as the “Mother of Exiles,” according to Fox News Latino.
These new webcams will provide views from the torch that have not been available to the public since 1916, said Stephen A. Briganti, president of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation Inc., according to Fox News Latino.
“The statue is the most famous symbol in the world,” he said, according to Fox News Latino. “Most of the people in the world have seen it, but they have not seen it like this. It will be a visit that so many people, including New Yorkers, have never taken before.”
The Statue of Liberty is more than just a copper figure standing tall above New York Harbor – she symbolizes a promise of refuge, freedom and pride.
“Ive always had a strong feeling for the Statue of Liberty, because it became the statue of my personal liberty,” said poet David Antin.
So in lieu of this weekend’s upcoming festivities, why not top your costume off with a crown and torch, and take part in celebrating this historical birthday.
